Types of Marriage Celebrants in Australia: Civil, Religious and Registry Options

All legal marriages in Australia are solemnised by an authorised celebrant, but authorised celebrants work in different ways. Understanding the categories helps you find the ceremony that suits your values, location and plans.

Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrants

These celebrants generally conduct civil, non-religious ceremonies. They are often the most flexible option for couples who want to marry at a private home, venue, park, beach or other meaningful place. A civil ceremony still includes legal requirements, but the surrounding content can be shaped around the couple.

Commonwealth-registered religious marriage celebrants

These are registered celebrants who are also ministers of religion. They may conduct religious ceremonies in accordance with their religious body or organisation and can decide whether a ceremony aligns with their beliefs. If faith is central to your ceremony, discuss the form of ceremony early.

Ministers of recognised denominations

Some ministers are authorised through a recognised religious denomination and conduct marriages according to that denomination’s rites or customs. Their availability, venue expectations and ceremony format may be connected to the religious community they serve.

State and territory officers

Registry offices and certain courts can provide civil marriage ceremonies through authorised officers. This can be a good fit for couples seeking a straightforward legal ceremony, depending on the services available in their state or territory.

Choose based on the ceremony you want

Rather than assuming one route is better, talk through your priorities: a particular location, faith, cultural traditions, a small guest list, personal vows or a simple registry experience. Whichever option you choose, the legal requirements for a valid marriage still need to be met.
